Network Support/Security - Kayser Hall 202
Facilitators: Mark Hansen (ESU #3) not present - Congrats on baby daughter #3 Jeremy Vanek (ESU #3) Jonathan Becker (Omaha Public Schools)
Description: This session is targeted at those professionals who’s primary duties involve maintenance
of the Local Area and Wide Area Networks.
Talking Points: Bandwidth Issues, ISP Options, WAN and LAN, UNO, NDE, Network Nebraska (?),
Infrastructure / Wireless, Virtualization

Question about leasing / buying WAN links. Most seem to lease from their WAN/IP provider.

WAN link monitoring ideas: PRTG (not free), MRTG, Nagios (free, open-source), SolarWinds ($$) (has Visio mapping), Netprobe ($),

LAN monitoring ideas: spanning tree, certain switch vendors better than others (3Com are difficult to troubleshoot), Fiber to the Desktop (Volition) (no switches) Bellevue PS,

Wiring with CAT6? Yes, in renovations / new construction

Wireless: N? Westside, yes. High School has b/g disabled (cool!) Going well, so far. Mixed environment (b/g/n) really hinders performance. Where N-only, it is going very well. Apple airports (especially the newer N models) are not appropriate for the enterprise.

Aruba (Pap-Lav): Much less expensive than Cisco, great flexibility for guest networks. for $195, can purchase Aruba AP for home which acts like an AP at school. Can work with other APs.

Network Nebraska: Not so popular in the metro. ESU #3 getting a link, OPS (ESU #19) getting a link.

Virtualization: VDI (Vital Support Systems recommended by Elkhorn), Virtual Iron (cheaper than VMWare), Proof of concepts (Elkhorn, OPS)

Backups: Mostly tape, some backup to SAN (disk), What are the backup solutions for the buildings?

Personal equipment on the network: MAC address, Active Directory filters, else Port 80
